The bird sang again, but its song seemed not quite right this time. I continued along the trail, keeping my eyes trained over the sloughs as I approached the location from which I thought I had heard a Prothonotary singing. But I was pretty sure I was hearing a Protho, and the sound came from a direction in which I know a nest box suitable for Prothonotaries is located.) My excitement grew! It appeared I was likely to be successful in locating both of my desired subjects on this day. (I'm still very much a beginner at IDing birds by ear, and I'd not seen a Prothonotary since last summer, so I wasn't 100% certain I had the ID correct. I had not travelled much farther before I heard what I thought was the song of a Prothonotary Warbler. The forest was alive with birdsong, some from birds I could see, but much of it from birds hidden from my sight. I continued along the trail, snapping photographs of frogs and birds, mushrooms and wildflowers, as I went. This confirmed my suspicions that a pair was nesting in the area and buoyed up my hope for a good sighting on this day. But I'd not been out on the trail more than a few minutes when I heard the unmistakable sound of a Pileated Woodpecker drilling.

Most were the usual subjects: robins and grackles and red-winged blackbirds, plus a few yellow warblers-all birds common in Rondeau this time of year. I did not observe any other humans on the early part of my hike this day, but I did observe many birds. With park programming currently suspended, however, and peak birding season over, the park is pretty quiet (at least on the human front) these days, especially late on a Tuesday morning, which was when I headed out on the trail on this occasion. So it's a popular trail for park programming as well as amongst park visitors who, for whatever reason, want to enjoy a hike that isn't too much work. The trail starts and ends at the edge of the Visitor Centre parking lot. Tulip Tree Trail is a short loop trail, the main portion of which is only about 1 km in length. I was hopeful that knowing a likely location for a sighting in advance might enable me to be prepared to get a better shot than I have managed in the past.

I have reason to believe a pair are nesting near Tulip Tree Trail this year, however. Pileated Woodpeckers are more common here, but when I see them they are usually far away and/or obscured by trees.

Some estimates put the total population of Prothonotaries in Canada at less than a dozen breeding pairs in 2008, and one of them can reliably be found on Tulip Tree Trail each year. They are found here only during the breeding season and only in a handful of locations, all of which are on the north shore of Lake Erie. Prothonotary Warblers are rare in Canada. Prothonotaries are bright and beautiful and arguably the biggest draw to Rondeau Park when the birds return each spring. Pileateds are our largest woodpecker, and I think they are cool. The day after my paddle last week, I hiked Tulip Tree Trail in Rondeau, hoping to get some nice photographs of a Prothonotary Warbler ( Protonotaria citrea) and/or a Pileated Woodpecker ( Dryocopus pileatus) to show you.
